Although I'm a bigger fan of TV series than of movies, I'm a movie fan, too.
And as is it is with my fav TV shows, it is hard to pick out my fav movies. There are so many movies I like. It was most difficult to decide which movies with
Humphrey Bogart, Marilyn Monroe and John Wayne I should choose, I really like all of them a lot. However, these are the ones I've chosen.
Docudrama
GB 2013
A great movie about the beginnings and early years of Doctor Who. Great actors. It's a very intense movie, very touching. During a particular scene I started actually crying. And when the movie was over, it took me awhile to gather myself again.
Without further explanations ;)
Drama
USA 1942
Casablanca is cult, a lot of the film's quotes had become common catch phrases. And although it has no real romantic Happy End for Rick, it has a kind of.
It's a kind of free adaption of the 1970s TV series, but it got it's spirit. It's a big fun, the films are a bit self-ironic. Popcorn cinema, one may say, but great.
stop-motion-animated fantasy-horror film
USA 2005
My favorite film to watch at Helloween.
Action / Comic adaption
USA 1990
A perfect comic adaption.
Madonna in her best movie role.
Comedy horror
USA 1988
Elvira is cult. And this movie is just crazy - I love it. It's just big, big fun.
Comedy Horror
USA 2011
In most cases I like the original more than the remake. Fright Night is one of the rare exceptions. It's somehow more realistic than the 1985 film. Also the characters are more sympathetic, more interesting. Okay, the facz that one of my favorite actors - David Tennant - starred in the film may also have played a role ...
Science fiction / Comedy
USA 1999
This film is a really fantastic hommage to Star Trek and to the Fans.
The actors a great (Tim Allen sitting in the Captain's chair really looks like Captain Kirk), the sfx are exquisite and the plot is congenial.
Family
USA 1992
Okay, it's a miniseries, but on DVD it's one movie ... However, it's for the heart. I love it and watch it every first Sunday of each year.
Science fiction / Comedy
USA 1986
Big fun, 1980s' charme, and the loveable Lea Thompson ...
Raiders of the Lost Ark, like Star Wars changed the world of movies forever. And Indy is a chaacter one must really like.
Oh, I have to confess, I haven't seen part 4 yet ... I'm no sure if I want to, the "old trilogy" was perfect ...
Fantasy
USA 1946
Every Christmas Eve we are watching this outstanding movie. And every year we got tears in our eyes watching the last scene ... This film shows a better world, a wolrld as ours should be, where people are there for each other, where they help each other ...
James Stewart is great as George Bailey, also the other actors are just fantastic.
Monster / Adventure
USA 1933
A big adventure.
A milestone in movie history.
The outstanding stop motion animation by Willis O'Brien.
Comedy
1927 - 1951
Laurel & Hardy are to me the best comedy doule act of all times. Their movoes got a timeless humor that makes the real classics.
Adventure
USA/UK/Japan/Germany 2001
It's a really cool movie, somehow classic and modern. I've never played one of the gamae, but I think watching this film feels like playing the game.
Fantasy drama
USA 1933
The filmic adaption of James Hilton's novel is "a grand adventure film, magnificently staged, beautifully photographed, and capitally played", like Frank S. Nugent of the New York Times said. Sadly, only a reconstructed version of the film is avaiable, but it's still a brillant movie.
Here's what said on the DVD about it:
When Frank Capra's LOST HORIZON was first shown in March, 1937 it had a running time of 132 minutes. Over the years nearly 25 minutes of the film were removed, and various shortened versions were reissued. By 1967 the original nitrate camera negative had detoriated, and no copies of the full length film were known to survive.
The restoration of LOST HORIZON began in 1973 when the American Film Intitute conducted an exhaustive survey of archives around the world to identify all
surviving versions of the film. As a result of the AFI's efforts, a complete 132 minute soundtrack was located, and all but seven minutes of the picture. The technical quality of the newly found
material ranged from excelent to poor.
For the current restoration, Sony Pictures Entertainment and UCL Film and Television Archive have utilized contemporary laboratory and digital technologies to
obtain the best possible quality. Because the film is still seven minutes shorter than the soundtrack, the missing scenes have been filled in with freeze frame images from the film and with a
selection of surviving production still photographs.
Science fiction
USA 1997
The stoic face of Tommy Lee Jones in whatever situation.
The chemistry between Will Smith and Tomy Lee Jones - and the contrast between their characters.
Vincent D'Onofrio as a Bug from outer space wearing a "body suit".
Well, the Miss Marple that appears in these films is a lot different from that in the books - but the Miss Marple as she is portrayed by the fabolous Margaret Rutherford is just outstanding! It's always great fun to watch this resolute old Lady solving the crimes. And it's not only Margaret Rutherford, all actors in these films are great and every charczer is so elaborated and eccentric. Very british, indeed.
Romantic comedy
USA 2010
Some actors I really like - Alyssa Milano, Christopher Gorham, Michael Landes, Beau Bridges - in a romantic, funny and surprising movie.
Action / Horror / Science fiction
USA 2007
Great fun watching it every time again.
One of the best dialogues in movie history:
El Wray: "Get up. We're leaving."
Cherry Darling: "I can't walk."
El Wray: "So what? Get up!"
Cherry Darling: "Motherfucker! Look at me!" [removes blanket to reveal her missing leg] "Look at me! I was gonna be a stand-up comedian! Who's gonna laugh now?"
El Wray: "Some of the best jokes are about cripples. Let's go."
Cherry Darling: "It's not funny. I'm pathetic."
El Wray: "Would you stop crying over fucking spilt milk?"
Cherry Darling: "I have no leg!"
[looking frustrated, El Wray rips off a wooden table leg and shoves it in Cherry's stump]: "Now you do. What do you think?"
And Cherry's "Dance of Death" is just ... marvelous!
Just three words: Captain Jack Sparrow!
Fantasy
USA 1998
Which fan of a TV series has never wished to be able to live in his fav show? ...
horror-rock opera musical film
USA 2008
The film has a unique style, it feels a bit like steampunk but it isn't. The music is fantastic, the look is fantastic, there is a lot of tragedy in the plot - ah, one must have seen the movie to understand why I love it.
Science fiction
USA 1986
Number 5's search for more input, his innocence, his friendship to Stephanie ... Short Circuit is a perfect example for what I like so much onthey films of the 1980, they have this certain easiness, a kind of innocence ...
Action-thriller
USA 1994
It's fast. It's full of action and suspense. Charismatic and sympathetic characers. Did I mention it's fast?
I like part 2, too. Although it's not as good as part one, however, the sequence when the ship reaches the island is great.
Spider-Man is my favorite superhero and watching these films is like reading the comics. They are just perfect.
Star Trek at it's best. A story arc similar to an ancient drama, beloved characters and that certain feeling of Star Trek.
What i really want is the original trilogy, as it was shown in the cinemas, on blu ray or even DVD. In a good quality. Not what Mr. Lucas later made out of the films, no - I want the originals!
Oh, and I really don't like the prequels ...
Science fiction
USA 1997
Great characters, great space scenes, great action scenes, great humor.
"Come on, you apes! You wanna live forever? Killl 'em all!"
Fantasy
USA 2011
I really like the play with the different reality levels, the dark atmosphere, the thrilling action sequences, ...
Romance / Fantasy
USA 2010
It's very romantic and I like the idea of imaginary friends being real.
Film noir / Crime
USA 1946
Bogey'n'Bacall
A great, complicated and nearly inextricable crime story
Bogey is also one of my favorite actors and there is no film he starred in that I don't like a lot. However, I decised to put The Big Sleep in this list, because the plot is really outstanding and absolutely unpredictable, because Bogart and Bacall are a great couple and because the film got a Happy End.
Comedy
USA 1965
Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, Nathalie Wood and Peter falk in a Blake Edwards film! It's fun, it's adventure and it shows the greatest pie fight ever.
Superhero comedy
USA 1994
One of the most funniest movies ever. With a brillant Jim Carrey, a loveable Cameron Diaz, exquisite sfx and a lot of references to classic cartoons.
stop motion musical fantasy film
USA 1993
It's bizarre, it's emotional, it's just Tim Burton style.
And every year's x-mas season I watch it.
Horror comedy
USA 1963
Some genre veterans (Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre) and a young Jack Nicholson in horror comedy with that special kind of black humor I love. And the spells the magicians use :D
I am a fan of X-Mas and I am a fan of Tim Allen. So, these X-Mas comedys are just pefect for me. They are very funny, but they also have their contemplative moments.
Jack Arnold is probably the most famous science-fiction director of the 1950s. His films have, decades after their creation lost none of their charm and brilliance. They were B-movies, but I believe, having not such a big budget and no "big stars" made them even better, because the stories they are telling are in the centre. Also Jack Arnold was a brillant director with a certain style one will always recognize once you have seen one of his movies.
Science fiction
USA 2002
I know - most people seem to prefer the 1960 film (which I also like), but I like the 2002 film more. It's kind of more realistic and one can commiserate more with the leading character and his tragic love story.
Western
USA 1969
John Wayne stars as U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn and old Rooster is an awesome character. He is hired by 14-year ols Mattie, a girl who know what she wants and how to get it, to fnd the murderer of her father - and the scenes with Rooster and Mattie are glorious.
Comedy
USA 1955
A dark crime comedy with a great ensemble
A comedy with Humphrey Bogart
Watching how the three escaped prisoners make X-mas a happy time for the Ducotels, using their "special talents" is a x-mas ritual to me. Its a
lighthearted but also dark comedy, a crime story that fits to the season.
